A Soldier in George Washington's Continental Army 1775-1783

Presenter: George Cummings, Revolutionary War Historian

Join us for a presentation on life as a Continental Soldier, to include a view of full regalia, along with weapons, accoutrements and facts, regarding how a rag-tag army ultimately wins independence from the best and largest army in the World at that time.

Central New York in the American Revolution

Presenter: Dale Vedder

Dale will discuss our Pompey history up to and including the year 1777 during the American Revolution.   His talk includes the siege of Fort Stanwix, the Tryon County Militia, and contributions of the Oneida Nation, among other topics.  He will also discuss clothing and weapons of the period.

Pompey Historical 50th Anniversary Celebration Day

Your Hosts: Pompey Historical Society and Heritage Hill

Family day of games, petting zoo, food, hay rides, and two dancing events.  In the afternoon, we Dance Through the Decades, and in the evening, an old-fashioned Barn Dance.   In the afternoon event, we will teach you the dance moves and dance to the popular music of the 1920s through the 1980s. The Barn Dance features caller, Bob Nicholson.   Come (re)learn the steps and dance for the fun in celebration of the 50th birthday of Pompey Historical Society!

Domestic Architecture of Nineteenth-Century Pompey

Early settlement, agricultural expansion, and hamlet development each had its own identifiable trends in house design.  What was happening in the outside world affected local architectural expression, dooryard layout, and the technology of construction.  Come hear about Pompey houses of the 1800s.

This Old House

Presenter: Jeffery Kellish, Syracuse University Masters Candidate in Archaeology

An historic trip through time through the artifacts left behind by the early settlers on the Kellish Farm site on Pompey Center Road. The time period covered is circa 1790 through the 1920s. Jeffery’s archaeological studies have been and are currently based, in part, on this investigation of the family farm grounds and buildings. Come hear his fascinating story.

Eight Presidents Most People Know Nothing About

Presenter: Dr. Larry Cook, Presidential Historian and Scholar

Learn about eight U.S. Presidents who have fallen into the recesses of history and are rarely talked about or recognized today. Dr. Cook will also have a display of memorabilia from his private collection of Presidential artifacts pertaining to these fascinating former Presidents.

We are so happy to welcome Larry into the PHS fold where we intend to make good use of his knowledge and skills. We also welcome him back to Pompey where he grew up and where his parents still reside in the Hamlet of Oran!

The Loomis Gang

Presenter: Sue Greenhagen, Historian, Village of Morrisville and Town of Eaton

Sue portrays former Sheriff of Madison County, William F. Bonney, who tells the history of a notorious 19th-century crime family located in central New York. Come hear about the characters, the crimes, and the consequences of the Loomis crime spree. We will be wishing Sue Happy Birthday after her presentation!

World War Casualties of Madison County

Presenter: Matthew Urtz, Madison County Historian

Matthew will talk about his book, World War Casualties of Madison County, which tells the story of over 200 soldiers who were killed during their World War I or II service. Matthew will also share his interesting research process resources by which he was able to identify Madison County soldiers previously unidentified by County records.
